General House Hold Pest Management
Cockroaches - An all-too-common home invader, cockroaches live off of
vegetables but will also help themselves to things like butter, beer, starches,
meats and leather. As nocturnal insects, cockroaches sleep during the day in
cracks and crevices, storm water drains, sewers, retaining walls and similar
places. They can carry and spread disease causing organisms.
Ants - Ants live in colonies and have the ability to organise themselves even
when they number in the thousands. They are mostly omnivorous, which means they
will eat practically anything. In their search for food, they often end up
infesting people's homes and are difficult to get rid of.
Silverfish - Silverfish are flat, long insects that infest homes in search of
warmth and food. They are often found in wall voids, roof cavities, sub-floor
areas and elsewhere in homes and buildings. They prefer foods that are rich in
carbohydrates and proteins, but can live for long stretches without any food at
all.
Webbing Spiders - These spiders rely on their silk to get around. They're
usually found around windows and gutters or in curtains and railings.
Redback Spiders - Redbacks are often found in window sills, outdoor toilets,
tins, boxes, sheds - mainy warm, dry places. The bite from a female redback
spider can be quite painful and may cause ilness or even death. Male redbacks do
not bite.
Fleas - Cat fleas and dog fleas are the most common kinds of fleas found in
the home. They are very annoying and their bites can be quite itchy and
irritating. They generally spend the majority of their time living on the cat or
the dog, and don't really live off these animals for very long.
Bees and Wasps - These pests are most common during the warm summer months.
Bee and wasp stings can be painful, but wasps are the more aggressive of the
two.
Lice (Bird and Paper Lice) - Bird lice are microscopic pests that start off
infesting baby birds. When baby birds fly away, bird lice often infest homes in
search of food. Paper lice prefer quiet, damp warm places and are often found in
stored food, behind electrical outlets and in wall voids.
Mites - These microscopic pests can be found virtually anywhere in the home.
Certain varieties of mite cause allergies and illness in people.
Carpet Beetle - These pests attack fibres that come from an animal origin.
For example, they might go after a wool sweater or carpets woven out of animal
fibres.
Case Moth - Case moths prefer fibres of all kinds, and are usually infest woolens, downs, feathers, almonds, many roots and leaves and a huge array of
other things. They can be found in the upholstered furniture of many homes.
Rodent Management
House Mouse - House mice cause a lot of damage with the chewing they do. They
can also transmit diseases easily. They are quite small and weigh around 20 g.
Norway and Roof Rats - These are larger rodents, weighing between about 260g
and 450g. Roof rats are usually found in indoor roof voids. Norway rats prefer
undisturbed, secluded places that may include roof and wall voids.
Timber Pest Management
Subterranean Termites - These soil swelling termites are a major problem in
Australia; millions can be included in a single colony. They can enter the home
via cracks in the concrete, through pipes or through many different means and
are very destructive.
